For watching movies, how many lumens do i need on my projector for screen that is less 84″?

I live in a small apartment and am looking to project on a screen that is at most going to be 84″. I think I would actualy be fine with 72″ if I can find one.

Most of the reviewers seem to be using 100″ but I just do have the wall space or throw distance to use this. plus It would be way to big to way from the distance we will be sitting at.

ALSO

For non HD DVD’s, an 800×600 resolution should be fine, right? I have alot of stuff that is full screen so I really don’t want the widescreen one. Plus I was planning on getting a gray screen to reduced the black bars and improve darker colors.

Stay in the range of 315 to 350 lumens which should be sufficient for your specifications.

Any LCD projector which has an under 300 lumens setting at low/economy lamp output would be too dim. If you are projecting 16:9 widescreen movie material, I’d select a DLP projector since the image is more movie like and the contrast is snappier than an LCD projector.

    Good luck!

The previous answer will work if you find an older used projector because most projectors produced now are usually not less than 1500 lumens. I would go with a Mitsubishi XD105 projector which is 1600 lumens or a XD205 which is 2000 lumens. They are both DLP projectors, cost less than $1200, great warranty, and very quiet, and have long lamp hours. Mitsubishi has become one of the best and fastest sellers at our shop.

for home viewing a 1800 – 2400 lumens projector will be suffecient – I would still get an XGA (1024×768 native) in case you ever wanted to hook up notebook or home computer. the DLP projectors are nice, but LCD will help you stay in budget

For what you are trying to do there is NO reason to spend anywhere near $1000 or higher as others have suggested. Also, if you go with lumens that bright you run the risk of the picture “fading” from the brightness.

I would reccomend the InFocus IN72 or IN76 DLP projector. It’s a tri-reel so you don’t have the rainbow effect, is HD capable, and I picked up an IN72 recently on Tigerdirect. com for like $450 after rebate. Here is a link to both for specs and reviews.

Epson also makes a couple of good LCD projectors like the Epson S4. You can get one of those for about $450.
