Does anyone know how to reduce motion blur on a DLP projector?

I just bought a new DLP projector and while the picture is great, I can really notice motion blur and ghosting when things are moving quickly on the screen. I’ve done some reading into it and found that it’s called Temporal Dithering. Apparently only a small percentage of people can see it and I happen to be among those unlucky ones.

Does anyone have any techniques to reduce the effect?

Thanks,

Mike

Is your projector sold as a data projector or for home theater? Often the data projectors are less expensive and have less internal processing because they figure that they will be used with a computer and its video card will be doing a lot of the work. To see if this is perhaps the issue you can try connecting a computer and watching the same video that way. If that is not the issue then its likely due to it being a single chip machine. This means that there is only one DLP chip and to get the colors they have a color wheel that spins very fast. As the wheel spins the chip forms the picture for what ever color the wheel is on at the time. This happens so fast that most people never see it but as you have read a few are ‘lucky’. The best way to get around this is to find a 3 chip projector. In a 3 chip machine the light is divided into the 3 colors with a prism and each chip then simultaneously produces the colors that then are re combined by another prism. Downside to this is they are more expensive. Originally you could only get these in professional models but over the last few years there are some higher end consumer grade machines. If you cant afford those then you would want to look for a 3 LCD machine. I believe Sanyo still has some LCD models.

Thanks for the education about the color wheel, doornobk. Always wondered about that.
